If you’re still reading this blog article, it is safe to assume you know a little about Ayahuasca and would like to see how it can help you. From what we know, the last couple years saw Ayahuasca enjoy steady growth across the globe, far into non-native regions where its usage and practice are more of a frenzy than history.

But whether you’re a veteran of the Ayahuasca ceremony or you’re still planning your first experience, let’s bring you up to speed on the basics.

The Background of The Ayahuasca Retreat

Ayahuasca is a brew made from a plant of the same name. It is native to the Amazon regions of South America. When you think of an Ayahuasca retreat, think of Southern Peru. Accounts of its history vary and there is no consensus on the exact time it was discovered. But as the Amazonians of old left no written account of the psychedelic plant, it is widely believed that the Amazon people have been using it as a psychoactive therapy dating back at least 5,000 years.

Some school of thought find it difficult to accept that they could have realized its potency that early in history given the absence of sufficient technology for laboratory analysis of the plant’s active ingredients.

That controversy, not withstanding, Ayahuasca in its modern day practice is a condensation of about 100 years of evolution. Usually brewed by a spiritual leader of the region known as a Shaman, the plant contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a psychoactive compound which is responsible for the hallucinatory experiences people get after consuming the brew.

The Ayahuasca retreat; Peru experience, has gradually gained attention and is believed by many to be one of the most beneficial spiritual retreats in the world. From what we know about it and what previous participants say, this is what you should expect in terms of experience and benefits when you take this spiritual retreat. We’re not done by any means.

Before deciding on the Ayahuasca experience, it’s safe to assume you really want to have a general idea of what it will look like. If this is true for you, pay attention to the next paragraph.

What To Expect At The Ayahuasca Ceremony...

At this point, it’s needless to bore you with step-by-step details of what an Ayahuasca rite looks like. That’s a different article for another day and you will read them on this site later. Right now, we’ll dive deep into the major highlights of this retreat.

First, it’s not uncommon to confront another part of you. It is not uncommon to rediscover oneself after an Ayahuasca Peru experience. Some people say it is like having a decade of psychological healing infused in their minds in one night.

Overwhelming for some, but for others, it is like a dance with schizophrenia as the doors and windows of your soul will be flung open as your mind gets flooded with hallucinatory emotions.

You may come face-to-face with your deepest worries or your brightest joy; a state that will last anywhere from one to four hours or even more.

It is important to note that the ceremonies are not the same. Some last for one night while some could last even more nights. Also, each Shaman has a slightly different twist to how he performs his rite.

But keep in mind that even if you participate in a specific ceremony ten times, the feeling will be different each time you return.

But no matter the region of the Amazon where you visit for this, the goal is pretty much the same: to help you open up your mind, connect with different higher energies, confront your other side, settle internal conflicts and worries you may been struggling with, and positioning you for total healing both in mind and body.

Again, many benefits are associated with the Ayahuasca plant which is the principal pillar of this ceremony. But we might as well classify these benefits under two broad categories: health and emotional

Ayahuasca Retreat Health Benefits

Research after research suggest that Ayahuasca affects the brain positively. A popular illustration will be how it works with the nervous system of the human body to induce ecstasy, hallucinations and deep connections with infinite intelligence

At the brain level, β-carbolines and DMT (which are the major active compounds in the Ayahuasca brew) is believed to help protect the brain’s neurons from oxidation and degeneration. There is scientific evidence to support this claim for DMT and β-carbolines respectively as can be found here and here.

Emotional Benefits of Ayahuasca

The plant also gets credit as a good mood enhancer and emotion regulator as participants of the ceremony have reported significant improvement in treating their anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and persistent depression related conditions.

Another benefit that is easy to forget is that you will overcome a lot of your fears after this experience. It goes without saying that it takes a decent deal of courage to journey hundreds (perhaps thousands of miles) into the heart of the Amazon for this thrilling yet breathtaking adventure.

Putting this in perspective, you’ll agree that drinking the Ayahuasca brew before your shaman in a near eerie setting while somewhat oblivious of the experiences that lie ahead will require even more courage.
